چکیده

In traffic grooming several low rate traffic (requests) can be combined into a high bandwidth wavelength such that at any network link the combined traffic rate is no more than the available wavelength bandwidth. When more than one requests are combined to share wavelength bandwidth Add-Drop Multiplexors (ADM) are needed for opto-electronic conversion at nodes where traffic is added or dropped from the wavelength, such that, traffic on same wavelength may share ADM. The grooming problem aim to minimize the number of ADM and wavelength requirement on the network. For general instances the problem is NP-hard even on simple network topology such as Path and Rings [12]. For ring networks with all-to-all instances the problem have been optimally solved for some granularity (grooming ratio) [1, 2, 3, 11, 19, 18]. We consider general instances on ring networks with grooming ratio 2 and propose grooming algorithm that is experimentally evaluated for performance which compares favourably with previously known algorithms for the problem. The proposed algorithm can groom instance of both, unidirectional and bidirectional rings. Furthermore, we describe how to efficiently adapt the algorithm to rings with arbitrary granularity.

Effective traffic grooming in WDM rings

Much work has focused on traffic grooming in WDM ring networks. Previous work has considered many aspects of traffic grooming, including minimizing number of ADMs, minimizing number of wavelengths, single hub and multiple hub architectures, switching capabilities etc. In this work, we derive general and tighter bounds on the number of wavelengths in WDM ring networks that may be capable of swit...

Performance Analysis on Various Wavelength Assignment Algorithms with Traffic Grooming

Wavelength Division Multiplexed switching networks are important for the future transport networks. This paper analyzes the performance of various wavelength assignment algorithm and their effect on the blocking probability of the connection request in the optical network with traffic grooming. The wavelength assignment is a unique feature in wavelength routed network that distinguish them from...

Inter - Semester 2011 Handout 13 1 5 Traffic Grooming inWavelength - RoutedWDMNet

In the last chapter, we assume that each source-destination (s-d) pair has its taffic demand equal to an integer multiple of wavelength unit. Accordingly, supporting such traffic in transparent wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks can be done by establishing lightpaths between s-d pairs. In addition, these established lightpaths will be fully utilized. In this chapter, we allow for s...

Dynamic traffic grooming algorithms for reconfigurable SONET over WDM networks - Global Telecommunications Conference, 2002. GLOBECOM '02. IEEE

Most of today's optical networks are built on E:ONET rings [I]. Using WDM technology, multiple rings can be sup ported on a single fiber ring [3]. In this architecture, each wavelength independently carries a SONET ring. Each SONET ring can further support multiple low speed streams (e.g. an OC48 SONET ring can support 4 OC-12 or 16 OC-3 streams at the same time). At each node a WDM Add/Drop Mu...

Survivable Traffic Grooming in WDM Optical Networks

Traffic grooming, in which low-rate circuits are multiplexed onto wavelengths, with the goal of minimizing the number of add-drop multiplexers (ADMs) and wavelengths has received much research attention from the optical networking community in recent years. While previous work has considered various traffic models and network architectures, protection requirements of the circuits have not been ...
